Transition Plates

Transition Plates

NR Transition Plates for Vertical Direct Chill (VDC) Billet Casting equipments and NR Header Plates for Horizontal Direct Chilled (HDC) casting machines are replaceable calcium silicate parts integrated into the billet mould assemblies. These components form the initial boundary of the mould prior to the primary solidification process. The axisymmetric transition plates designed for VDC applications come in a comprehensive variety of geometries suitable for all casting machine technologies. Likewise, North Refractories HDC transition plates can be produced in nearly any specified diameter and aperture.

We offer different types of transition plates for billet casters from a variety of NR carbon fiber reinforced calcium silicate materials, normally NR-80 is the most popular and preferred choices for typical application on aluminum casting equipment, however sometimes thick transition plates with large dimensions are designed and needed, we will recommend another type processed NR calcium silicate materials to fit that which have a much lower permanent shrinkage to eliminate the need to retighten the mould assemblies and prevent fractures in larger sizes T plates.  North Refractories also has developed some new type materials transition plates, such as graphite combined calcium silicate boards which will help to reduce both oil penetration and heat loss with less thermal expansions.

Features of Transition Plates

  • Machined to stringent tolerances to ensure fit and function

  • No refractory ceramic fibers (non-RCF) to comply with local regulations and improve the health and safety of workers

  • Low thermal conductivity to ensure solidification occurs at the mold

  • High toughness to manage strain and stress during operation

  • Thermal shock resistant to ensure successful cast start, and non-wetting to provide oxide mobility during casting
